17th November:

The quiet village of Buchanan was just a few kilometres away, but it was a Buchanan from New Zealand that was making a noise at Kurri Kurri Speedway on Saturday.

Husband and wife duo, Andrew Buchanan and Phillipa Burns from Palmerston, NZ scored two wins from three rides in the opening round of the Blackchrome Speedway Sidecar Grand Slam, before heavy rain forced officials to abandon the meeting. Following a nervous third place in their first race, Buchanan and Burns scored two impressive wins in their next two races, including a victory over current Australian champion Darrin Treloar.

The racing was extremely competitive, so much so that when the meeting was abandoned after three of the five rounds of qualifying heats, seven riders were separated by only two points. Current Australian speedway sidecar champion Darrin Treloar and his Lake Macquarie passenger Blake Cox shared the lead on eight (8) points with three times world speedway sidecar champions Mick Headland and Paul Waters from Murray Bridge, South Australia.

New Zealanders Buchanan and Burns had scored seven (7) points along with two other pairings – Shane Hudson and Brad Pitt from Sydney and current Sidecar Glam Slam champions, Mark Plaisted and Brian Anthony from South Australia.

Crowd favourites Grant Bond (Maitland) and Glen Cox (Boolaroo) were well in contention with six (6) points as were Queenslanders Stuart Firth and Yolanda Wilken.

The series now takes a break for the Xmas/New Year period before the second round will be held at Murray Bridge Speedway, South Australia on 4 January 2014.

The next race meeting at Kurri Kurri Speedway will be on Saturday 7 December when the officially sanctioned 2013 NSW Speedway Senior Solo Championship will be held.

Despite holding a comfortable lead in the 2013 Club Championship as well as in the $10 000 Heffernan Motorsport Series, Newcastle speedway rider Sam Masters will be determined to finish on a high note when he contests the final round of both series at Kurri Kurri Speedway this Saturday (26 October).

Masters has established an unassailable lead in the rich Heffernan Motorsport Series mainly due to the withdrawal from the series of his nearest challenger, Central Coast rider, Taylor Poole who sustained a broken leg in a recent race meeting at Tamworth Speedway. Masters has a 23 point lead in the Club Championship but with other riders spurred on to fight out the remaining places in both events, Masters will be keen to finish the daytime racing season at Kurri Kurri on a high.

Fellow Newcastle riders, Daine Stevens and Michael Penfold, along with Jack Holder (Appin) are tightly bunched on points behind Masters in the Heffernan Motorsport series. Central Coast rider, Tyler King joins Stevens, Penfold and Holder as strong chances for the runner-up spot in the Club Championship.

The senior sidecar Club Championship is certainly not a ‘done deal’. Local teenagers Hayden Bond and Brady Cox (61 points) have a narrow three point lead over current Australian Sidecar Champion Darrin Treloar (58 points) and his new passenger Blake Cox, Brady’s brother.

The final round of the Junior 125cc Solo Club Championship will get the day of racing underway at 1:30pm with the remaining divisions to commence at 3:30pm.

This will be the final daytime event of the autumn/winter season with the Kurri Kurri Speedway Club having a bumper spring/summer night season scheduled to begin just two weeks later with two major speedway meetings on consecutive weekends in November.

The 2013 NSW Under 21 250cc State Championship and the 2013 NSW Under 21 350cc State Championship will be decided on Saturday night 09 November. Motorcycling Australia just recently approved the separation of the two engine classes. The opening round of the 2013/2014 Speedway Sidecar Grand Slam will be held the following Saturday night 16 November. The series will be held over seven rounds including events in South Australia and the Northern Territory.

Fifty riders have taken part in the opening three rounds of the inaugural $10 000 Heffernan Motorsport Series for senior solo riders. The introduction of the series has created unprecedented interest from riders and fans for the normally quiet downtime of the speedway season.

23rd April:

Kurri Kurri speedway rider Mason Campton is frustrated with a capital ‘F’. He was to have ridden in the 2013 British Speedway Premier League competition but has not been able to obtain a visa. Now the Australian autumn/winter speedway racing calendar is in full swing but his bikes and equipment are still in England.

I just can’t take a trick,” Campton said. ”The first round of the Club Championship has been run, the first round of the $10 000 motorsport series has been run and the second round of the Club championship is on Sunday and I’ve missed the lot. Giving riders a head start is not a good thing.”

Newcastle speedway rider Sam Masters also has not been able to obtain a visa to fulfil his contractual obligations in Great Britain, but he won the opening round of the Club Championship last month and scored top points in the opening round of the rich motorsport series at Tamworth Speedway last weekend.

The second round of the eight round 2013 Kurri Kurri Speedway Club Championship will be held at Loxford Park Speedway, Kurri Kurri this Sunday. Events for junior and senior solo speedway riders, events for junior and senior sidecar riders and events for quad riders will make for a hectic day of speedway. Quad rider Jeff McKee is expected to compete after recovering from a heavy fall during the A Final in the opening round of the Club Championship last month.

All paying adults attending the race meeting on Sunday will receive a complimentary, full colour Kurri Kurri Speedway Club 2013 events postcard calendar.

Junior 125cc solo and junior sidecar events will begin at 9:30am with the junior 250cc/350cc solo, senior solo, senior sidecar and quad events getting underway at 12:00pm.
